Comforting dinner

With Collaboration with Korean designer, Kyungmi Lee, they created tableware which contains cosy Asian food stories for rainy windy days. The tableware is made for filling the moment with enhancing senses such as sounds, smell and temperatures of food for comforting our body and the experience by leading body movement. They have experience of riding the bike in the rainy windy day as very harsh foreign experiences. The tough riding often makes our bodies miss the "comforting food atmosphere" from their background as old habit. So they wanted to introduce their cultural comfort food atmosphere to harmonise with typical Netherland weather. As they introduce a menu which has rich personal memories and cultural stories, the tableware leads to body movements which stimulate senses to feel the stories and the comforting moment.

This project was presented at Dutch Design Week 2020.

Each piece of tableware was specifically designed for three fusion dishes they cooked, the fusion dish of savory egg custard of Japan (Chawan-mushi) and Korea (Gyeran-jjim), the fusion dish of soybean paste based soup of Japan (Miso soup) and Korea (Jjigae) and the fusion dish of savory pancake of Japan (Okonomiyaki) and Korea (Jeon). Their ceramic pieces deliver their personal as well as cultural stories, and they were designed to stimulate users' senses by holding, smelling and listening. In this way, the designers invite users to feel comforting food atmosphere with personal and cultural narratives through the experience and give them a chance to think the meaning of dinner.
